I joined Cooney Lees Morgan’s Corporate & Commercial Team in April 2023 after relocating to the sunny Bay with my family. Previously, I worked for Buddle Findlay in their Auckland office, spending 15 years in the corporate and commercial subgroup. I have a broad corporate advisory and commercial practice with a particular focus on mid-market mergers and acquisitions.

Before becoming a practising lawyer in 2008, I spent 10 years in commercial roles for successful New Zealand SMEs which has given me a hands-on appreciation of business in the real world. Those skills and experiences have been invaluable in my legal career, providing unique insight and highlighting the importance of providing sound legal advice that meets real needs and focuses on practical applications. I love being a trusted advisor who can help businesses of all shapes and sizes achieve their goals and succeed, and I harbour a particular passion for SMEs.

I advise on a wide range of corporate advisory matters, including mergers and acquisitions, business structures and restructures, shareholding arrangements, joint ventures and consortiums, limited partnerships, capital raising, commercial agreements, procurement processes, corporate governance, financial reporting, company secretarial and compliance obligations (private companies) and other corporate advisory matters.  I have a strong background in commercial contracting, and can help both private and public clients with drafting, negotiations and advising on a broad range of agreements.

When I am not at the office you can usually find me with my wife, Amy, and our kids at the beach, circumnavigating (and occasionally climbing) Mauao, and otherwise exploring all the Bay has to offer. I’m an avid ocean swimmer, long-time paddle boarder, novice surfer, aspiring golfer, ex-triathlete (about 15kg ago), and social footballer, with a weakness for good food and great wine.

For me, a perfect day involves a 2-3ft swell on a crisp blue sky day and a warm up in the hot pools with Amy and the kids, before firing up the BBQ with some friends.

I feel privileged to have a job that I love and to be able to live in such a beautiful part of the world.  I'm excited about what the future holds here at Cooney Lees Morgan, both for me and for the clients that I work with.
